Since opening its doors in July last year, GenesisCare, Noosa has been providing advanced, holistic, and personalised cancer care to the Noosa community and beyond. Among its many top-notch services, one lesser-known yet vital offering is its Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic, which supports patients as they transition out of treatment.
Designed to be a soothing space with friendly, caring medical professionals, the innovative new radiation therapy centre’s main aim is to provide not only advanced radiation therapy but also a sanctuary of care for local cancer patients. Their holistic approach ensures that each patient’s unique clinical, emotional, and personal needs are covered, so it’s no surprise that a dedicated Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic is part of their offering.
Leading the Noosa centre’s clinic is Jean Kelly – an experienced breast care nurse, Doonan resident, and mum of three. (GenesisCare also has a sister clinic operating in Buderim.) With more than 25 years’ experience, postgraduate qualifications in breast cancer care, and a keen interest in filling the breast cancer care gap in the Noosa area, Jean’s mission is to help patients navigate not just the physical changes following their treatment but also the social and emotional impacts of their diagnosis.
“Each patient’s journey is unique, and they often feel vulnerable when transitioning from frequent appointments with health professionals to fewer interactions,” she said.“We help them shift the focus from diagnosis and treatment to reclaiming their lives so that they can look towards a better future after their experience.”
As part of the service, Jean provides support and guidance to patients and their families as they move through treatment and begin to reclaim their lives. Based at GenesisCare Noosa, she is available to patients as much or as little as they need.
“I introduce myself as their breast cancer nurse and let them know I’m available for private conversations beyond their interactions with radiation nurses,” she explained. “I typically meet with them to review their entire journey and consolidate their care plan.”
Once a patient completes treatment, Jean reviews their treatment history, celebrates their progress, and outlines a five-year follow-up plan, ensuring they understand who to see, why, and how to manage potential side effects.
“How frequently we meet depends on the patient’s needs. I typically follow up six weeks post-treatment and again three months after starting hormone therapy,” she explained. “Often, these visits align with radiation oncologist appointments, so if required, they receive both clinical and emotional support.”
Jean notes that while some patients initially feel they don’t need support, after a conversation, they often realise how beneficial it is.
“I openly discuss not only physical symptoms but also mental health, intimacy, and emotional well-being, which are all essential to long-lasting healing,” she said.
A session with Jean begins with a warm introduction before diving a little deeper into the patient’s physical and emotional state, followed by their post-treatment care plan. Covering broader health topics like screenings and bone density tests, she takes a whole-person approach.
Her biggest tip for post-treatment patients is to stay vigilant about any changes in their body – not just breast cancer recurrence – so they can seek early intervention and care for any health concerns that arise.
“The care plan helps them fully understand their new journey, and I am on hand to answer any questions,” she said. “Sitting down with them after treatment and reviewing everything helps them recognise their progress and prepares them for the future.”
Jean also assists with follow-up planning and referrals as needed.
“Even with simplified explanations, the process can be overwhelming due to the emotional impact of their journey, so it helps to have someone on hand to break it all down,” she added.
When asked what she loves most about her job, Jean simply said “the hugs” demonstrating the deep connections she forms with patients.
With Jean’s compassion and guidance, the Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic at GenesisCare, Noosa is more than a service – it’s a vital support system. From advanced radiation therapy to holistic post-treatment care and everything in between, GenesisCare empowers patients to move forward with strength, knowledge, and renewed hope.
