Treatment for myeloma may include chemotherapy, steroids, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy and transplants. We combine this with consultant-led integrative care, such as wellbeing therapies and psychological support, to help you achieve the best possible outcome. Myeloma is a type of cancer that affects your bone marrow – the spongy tissue within the centre of some bones which produces the body's blood cells. Sometimes called multiple myeloma, the condition can affect multiple parts of the body at once, such as the spine, ribs and pelvis.

According to Cancer Research UK, around 5,800 new cases of myeloma are diagnosed each year in the UK, and it‘s more common in men than women. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the outcome for many patients. 

We also provide treatment for AL Amyloidosis (light chain Amyloidosis) an associated condition to myeloma and between 500-600 patients are diagnosed annually in the UK ( Myeloma UK)

There are a number of options of treatment available for myeloma and AL Amyloidosis at GenesisCare, such as:  

• Chemotherapy – anti-cancer (cytotoxic) drugs which destroy the cancerous cells 
• Steroids – anti-inflammatory medication that kills cancerous cells and improves the effectiveness of other myeloma treatments

If you‘re concerned about potential myeloma symptoms, we offer fast access to specialist myeloma tests and diagnostics. We also offer a dedicated Rapid Access Haematology Service at some of our centres. Here you‘ll see one of our expert consultants who specialise in blood and bone marrow cancers. They‘ll assess your symptoms and, if necessary, refer you for diagnostic tests such as blood tests, bone marrow aspirate biopsy, MRI and PET/CT scanning. Appointments are usually available within 24 hours.

There are different types of drug treatments, also called systemic anti-cancer therapies. Our expert teams continually review and assess new treatments to make these available to GenesisCare patients as early as possible. 

If your myeloma returns after previously being treated, it‘s called a relapse. Myeloma often relapses slowly, so when it comes back, you may not need treatment right away. At GenesisCare, you can receive drug treatments for relapsed myeloma to reduce your cancer’s progress and ease any symptoms.

We’re proud to offer advanced new treatments for hard-to-treat myeloma, allowing you to continue your care with us. Bispecific antibodies are available if you:

• Have relapsed or treatment-resistant multiple myeloma
• Have tried three other systemic therapies
• Wish to continue treating your myeloma

We also offer palliative care aimed at treating symptoms. Myeloma can cause significant pain and fracturing in your bones, and you may also be given bisphosphonate medicine to help reduce these side effects.  

There may be opportunities to access clinical trials for the newest treatments for myeloma. Clinical trials can be considered a suitable treatment option if you‘ve exhausted standard therapies or evidence suggests the trial treatment will be more successful at treating your condition. Your haematologist will discuss these opportunities in more detail with you.

Radiotherapy uses targeted, high-energy radiation beams to destroy cancer cells. It‘s often used to treat areas that have not responded to previous myeloma drug treatments and are causing pain.

Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) is a modern radiotherapy technique that directs beams of radiation in an arc across the treatment area. Together with surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT), it‘s possible to precisely target areas of cancer, adjusting the beam and intensity of the radiation dose to allow for movements in the body and avoid healthy tissues. Side effects of radiotherapy occur when healthy tissues receive radiation, so using this technique helps to limit the dose to tissues and organs surrounding the tumour. At GenesisCare, we offer VMAT wherever possible because it is widely recognised to be the highest standard of care currently available for patients needing this type of radiotherapy. 

No treatment is without side effects. Your doctor will explain these to you before you start your course of radiotherapy, together with the ways your treatment plan and supportive care can help manage or minimise these. 

Transplants are often used after high-dose chemotherapy, forming part of an overall treatment and care plan for myeloma. Transplants are needed to replace abnormal blood cells and damaged stem cells and to keep myeloma in remission.

Our consultants themselves, or in collaboration with leading haematologists who are experts in transplants for blood and bone marrow cancers, will offer this. If your consultant recommends a transplant, this can be arranged conveniently at one of our partner hospitals. You can then continue your other treatments at GenesisCare.

Stem cells are early types of cells which are found in your bone marrow and can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. When treating myeloma, stem cell transplants are used after high-dose chemotherapy to replace the abnormal blood cells and damaged stem cells.  

You‘ll likely have an autologous stem cell transplant, where the stem cells are collected from your body before chemotherapy. You may need an allogenic transplant in some rare instances, where the stem cells have come from an appropriately matched donor.
