Transrectal ultrasound
Transrectal ultrasound for prostate cancer
Transrectal ultrasound creates an image of organs in the pelvis. It involves the insertion of a small ultrasound probe into the back passage to create an image.
The most common reason for transrectal ultrasound is for the evaluation of the prostate gland in men with elevated prostate specific antigen or prostatic nodules on digital rectal exam. The use of a transrectal ultrasound is most common in combination with a biopsy of the prostate. This is known as TRUS Biopsy.
